The M 40 HV provides the HV-series High-Res players and pre-amplifiers with an extremely unique, uncompromising power amplifier that satisfies extreme audiophile demands under a wide range of operating conditions. It can also be used as a power amplifier for other high-end systems.
One key insight gained over decades of development is that electro-acoustics does not offer a single perfect solution for all requirements; instead, each overall design philosophy brings its own strengths and limitations. For this reason, T+A has consistently developed optimized solutions for each application, whether based on valve technology or modern digital signal processing.
The M 40 HV combines experience from multiple areas of high-end audio engineering: audiophile valve construction in the input stages, high-voltage technology in the transistor stages, intelligent thermal processor control in the output stages, and the characteristic uncompromising T+A chassis design and build quality.
To achieve this, the power amplifier is equipped with a circuit design that combines classic analog techniques, valve technology, high-voltage amplifier design, and intelligent parameter control. The entire input amplification section is based on carefully selected high-end 6SN7 valves operating in Class-A mode. This results in a highly harmonious sonic character and imparts the musical and tonal qualities of valve technology to the sound signature of the M 40 HV.
The input stage is designed as a symmetrical differential amplifier based on an all-valve cascode circuit. The subsequent voltage amplification stage is a high-voltage (HV) J-FET amplifier circuit with triode-like performance characteristics, also operating in pure Class-A mode. The result is excellent bandwidth and an agile performance that defines the overall sonic character of the amplifier.
At the input side, the current amplification stages are based on MOSFET driver transistors whose performance curve is carefully matched to the HV voltage amplifier stage. At the output side, the current amplifiers are equipped with no fewer than twenty high-performance ring emitter bipolar transistors. These components meet extreme requirements in terms of current delivery capability and bandwidth.
