Herbies formulated the firm yet loosely crosslinked material used in Fat Dots specifically for blocking mechanical soundwave energies. Their wide footprint provides good grip on surfaces and excellent lateral stability.
Fat Dots are not weight-specific. Each Big Fat Dot supports and isolates anywhere from 5 to well over 200 pounds. The major differences between them is the amount of vibration-blocking "beef" involved. Because Fat Dots may be employed in a wide variety of vibrational environments, specific recommendations are not always possible. Various Fat Dot sizes have a lot of overlap in their capacities, so choosing between them in many cases is not critical. Standard Big Fat Dots are our best sellers and have proven to be particularly effective throughout a wide range of vibrational circumstances and loudspeaker types. Square Fat Dots are very popular as isolation and decoupling interfaces between monitor speakers and stands (we recommend four under each speaker cabinet).
Perfect for floor-standing speakers, monitors, loudspeaker and stand decoupling, module decoupling, subwoofer, electrostatics, amplifier platforms, equipment racks.
Fat Dot Sizes:
- Small Fat Dot: 3/4" dia. x 1/4" thick
- Square Fat Dot: 1.06" square x 1/4" thick
- Big Fat Dot: 1-5/16" dia x 1/4" thick
- X-Large Fat Dot: 1.5" dia. x 1/4" thick
- Giant Fat Dot: 1.75" dia. x 3/8" thick
Big, Small, Square, and X-Large Fat Dots are all the same thickness and can be mixed and matched, or even stacked, creating a ton of possibilities. Use these only as an interface between broad, flat surfaces. For other uses, Herbie's Decoupling Glider or Cone/Spike Isolation Bases can be used between spikes and a flat surface such as a floor or cabinet. For spikes on carpet, use Herbie's Fat Gliders.
Monitor speakers often sit on speaker stands with small "plates", creating a potential for the speaker to be accidently bumped off the stand. This is why Herbies offer Fat Dots with a mild pressure-sensitive adhesive applied to either one side or both sides. This allows Fat Dots to be adhered either to the speaker stand creating a high friction surface which mitigates some of the risk of using a speaker stand.
For maximum safety, select the double sided adhesive which will create a much higher level of bond between stand and speaker.
The Adhesive option is not offered on the larger Fat Dots because it is assumed they will be used with larger, heavier speakers, which greatly reduces the risk of them being knocked off the stand.
Note: The unique adhesive used on Fat Dots makes only a moderately strong bond compared to other conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives, however, Fat Dots can be difficult to remove if adhered on both sides. This is because getting adequate leverage on them can be difficult. When separated, the adhesive layer might remain on the stand or the speaker instead sticking to the Fat Dot. The adhesive layer and the Fat Dot can usually be repositioned quite easily.
We generally recommend selecting adhesive on only one side if available, however, selecting Adhesive for both sides will provide much greater safety.
