The P75 Mk4.1 delivers full-size phono preamp performance in a compact chassis!
A full-blooded and full-featured phono preamp, the P75 Mk4.1 is the latest version of this perennial best-seller. The Mk4.1 features an innovative upgrade to the power supply and a brand-new, more powerful subsonic filter, making this wee device more capable than ever!
The Mk4.1 is compatible with virtually all phono cartridges; Moving Magnet, Moving Iron and Moving Coil, all are welcome. User selectable gain ranges from 40dB all the way up to a whopping 63dB! The Mk4.1 also offers a broad variety of loading options, plus three on-board Capacitance settings. The Mk4.1 even offers you the ability to load your own Resistance and Capacitance values for near infinite configuration possibilities, all without soldering! Plus, like all P75s, the Mk4.1 includes Dynavector's proprietary Phono Enhancer setting, designed to be used exclusively with Moving Coil cartridges.
All the hallmarks of previous generation P75s are here, as well. The sonic performance is exemplary, with extreme RIAA accuracy, a vanishingly low noise floor and outstanding dynamic range. Neutral and natural, with an inviting and delighting presentation, the P75 brings every recording to life in a vibrant way!
The P75 Mk4.1 is impressively flexible, offering compatiblity with a near unlimited combination of cartridges. Out of the box, the Mk 4.1 comes pre-configured for low-output MC cartridges, with 63dB of gain and 100 Ohms already loaded. According to Dynavector this configuration is suitable for 95% of MC cartridges, but as you'll soon read, the Mk4.1 offers even more capabilities, all of which are available just by switching internal jumpers!
Multiple Gain Settings
The gain section features wide-ranging compatibility, offering five different gain settings: 40dB or 44dB for most MM cartridges. There's a 56dB setting for low-output MM or MI cartridges operating down into the 1mV range. Finally, for low output cartridges, there's 60dB or 63dB of gain allowing this wee phono preamp to support cartridges all the way down to 0.15mV!
Loads of Resistance Settings
Built into this unit there are six resistance settings: 30 Ω, 60 Ω, 100 Ω, 220 Ω, 470 Ω & 47k Ω. This provides compatibility with a wide range of cartridges, but in case you've got a specific value in mind, this preamp accommodates custom resistance values! See owner's manual for more information.
Tons of Capacitance Settings
There are SIX capacitance settings: 100pF, 200pF, 300pF, 660pF, 760pF, 860pF, so you can "salt to taste". Unlike many phono preamps, the P75 Mk4.1 allows you to add capacitance to all settings, including MM and MI setttings. The sole exception is PE Mode, there's more on that mode in a separate tab. Would you like to "roll your own" capacitance value? This preamp accommodates custom capacitance values! See owner's manual for more information.
Phono Enhancer Mode
A Dynavector exclusive, this patented circuit gives the MC section of the phono preamp some very special capabilities! Please read the Secret Menu tab for more information on how this section works and cartridge compatibility.
The Mk4.1 version of the P75 brings with it two substantial improvements over previous generations.
First, the Power Supply for the Mk4.1 is a blank-slate reimagining with a novel approach. Leveraging high-speed technology, this power supply provides a substantial improvement in every parameter of the Mk4.1's performance. The Mk4.1 comes with a USB-PD power adapter, but this is not the power supply for the unit! This adapter merely provides external AC to DC voltage conversion, changing the voltage coming from the wall into DC.
The Mk4.1's actual power supply is built directly onto the circuit board and operates operates at an astonishing 1MHz! This frequency is far outside the audible bandwidth and because the Mk4.1 has no low-frequency power elements this effectively eliminates any potential sources of hum or interference. Placing the power supply internally delivers other benefits as well, including lightning-fast power delivery, superior noise isolation, far less heat and a far smaller form factor.
The second big upgrade is a revised Subsonic Filter, which is now both more transparent and vastly more effective, removing the "roaring" and woofer "pumping" effects of turntable rumble and warped records.
As you've already read, the P75 Mk4.1 is both an MM and MC phono preamp with an option to handle MI cartridges. However, you may not know that it also has a special trick up its sleeve!
With a simple switch of the internal jumpers, you can engage Dynavector's patented Phono Enhancer (PE) mode! Designed exclusively for MC phono cartridges, selecting the PE setting bypasses all the traditional voltage settings and resistance loadings for a phono cartridge and instead turns the Mk4.1 into a current-mode amplifier, aka Transimpedance. What makes this mode so special is that it ignores the output voltage of the cartridge "sensing" only the current output of the cartridge! MC cartridges tend to have fairly robust current output and the PE mode simply boosts that current up to line level!
The PE section delivers a huge sonic advantage. The output becomes juicier, more robust, full-blooded, cleaner, clearer and far more refined. The signal is robust and dynamic, with a far lower noise floor. The top octaves become silky smooth and deliver a very well-defined soundstage. In essence, engaging the PE makes the P75 Mk4.1 sound like a phono preamp several times more expensive than its modest price might indicate.
MC Compatibility in PE Mode
The PE Mode is NOT compatible with MM or MI phono cartridges. However, it IS compatible with a surprisingly broad range of MC cartridges. In fact, DV has given the P75 impressive flexibility, with three different PE Mode settings! Before you ask, internal impedance of the coils is the only spec that matters when selecting which setting to select. All manufacturers provide this spec with their MC cartridges, but if you don't have this information, it will be available online or from the cartridge's manufacturer/distributor.
PE Mode Settings
Low Resistance: For MC cartridges with internal impedance between 4Ω and 10Ω
Medium Resistance: For MC cartridges with internal impedance between 10Ω and 20Ω
High Resistance: For MC cartridges with internal impedance between 20Ω and 50Ω
Note: If your cartridge's impedance is right on the line between one setting and another, try both! There's no harm in this, you won't hurt anything and you might be surprised at the results! Just remember we always recommend that the P75 should be powered off before making any changes.
