A budget-friendly way to bring your room under control, ASI Sugar Cubes are very powerful room acoustic enhancers. Installation of the grid will require some time and effort, however, this setup gives the user unprecedented control over how the room responds to the system as a major musical contributor.
Dimensions: Each Sugar Cube is a roughly 0.43" cube.
Each Sugar Cube should be installed with the two drilled holes facing up. Start by placing them in a vertical line directly behind the front left and right speakers. Work from the floor up the room. Ideally, there should be about 28" of vertical height between each Sugar Cube. However, if the room has very strong reflections, this interval can be brought down to just 20". If the room is overdamped, consider separating them to up to 39" apart.
If your room suffers from excessive high-frequency presence, consider placing the Sugar Cubes with the single hole up.
The idea is to build a grid, as shown in the placement diagram above. Start with this pattern, but let your ears be your guide. Every room is different, so experimentation is key to success.
When placing Sugar Cubes the wall should be divided into four horizontal zones:
Zone #1) This is the zone closest to the floor. Any change here has the most effect on the low frequencies.
Zone #2) This is the second zone up from the floor, changes here have the most effect on the lower midrange.
Zone #3) The third zone up from the floor, changes here have the most effect on midrange focus and clarity.
Zone #4) This is the zone nearest the ceiling, and has the most effect on the high frequencies.
Once the primary setup has been accomplished, we move on to fine tuning. This is accomplished by rotating individual Sugar Cubes on the wall either clockwise or counterclockwise. Rotating the Sugar Cubes, even by a few degrees, can have surprising benefits to the tonal balance, opening up the soundstage or narrowing it. ASI claims the resolution precision of the Sugar Cubes to be as fine as ±1mm!
Another way to fine tune the room is by slightly moving the Sugar Cubes in the center up or down, this will allow for more broad control of the tonal balance.
Lastly, the space between the Sugar Cubes is considered resonant space, so varying the distance between the Sugar Cubes allows for greater control of resonance in the room. Spacing them closer together creates a tighter sound, spacing them will relax the sound.
An ASI Diffuser is a small sound body created by using a sandwich of two pieces of light maple with a washer of harder wood between. The body is hollowed out and a small hole connects the cavity to the outside. This functions like a miniature Helmholtz resonator. Adjusting the alignment of the wood's grain by rotating it clockwise or counterclockwise from straight up (Using the dot as a reference point) focuses the center image. Sold separately, adding a Diffuser should be considered an essential part of a proper Sugar Cube setup.
