Cable Research Lab Cables

Cable Research Lab cables started out several years ago as Winston Ma's FIM cables, which were known both for their extremely musical presentation and also for their extreme stiffness due to the use of forged conductors. Thankfully, over the last few years, CRL has gone away from forged conductors and now makes their cables by hand with the highest purity, drawn copper conductors, a far more flexible and easy to use design than the original.

CRL has three levels of cables - Copper, Silver, and Gold series. All three are reference levels cables, made by hand, and terminated with exotic (and very expensive) Bocchino Audio connectors for both the speaker cables and interconnects, and Oyaide connectors for the power cords. Don't read too much into the model names; all three cable series are made from the highest purity copper available.

Prices range from $850 to $2600/1m pair of the interconnects, $1150 to $2900 for an 8ft pair of speaker cables, and $895/1.5m for each of their two (high current/ low current) models of AC cable. It is our opinion that based on materials, build quality, and performance this line represents outstanding value. Big bang for the buck.

In addition to the hand made aspect of these cables, the cables are burned in at the factory and ready to make music in your system as soon as they are installed. CRL has won numerous awards for their cables including a prestigious Product of the Year award in 2008 from The Absolute Sound for their Silver series cables.

The Cable Company is pleased to offer the full line of cables from Cable Research Labs in our Cable Lending Library. Give us a call to arrange in-home audition.

Silent Source Audio Cables

Several of our customers turned us on to the Silent Source cable brand by telling us that these were some of the best high performance cables that they had tried in their systems, including some "statement" level cables from well-known manufacturers. While this sort of enthusiasm is often heard once or twice, when numerous people tell us the same thing over a period of time, we get very curious, and arranged for some of these cables to try on the systems here in our Ultra Systems sound rooms.

Silent Source cables are the creations of designer Frank Dickens, a former designer of military radar systems. His key to producing these high quality cables is to eliminate the mechanical imperfections found in many other designs by damping the conductors from end to end. He utilizes what he feels are the very best connectors that are available on both levels of cables, and pays particular attention to insuring that the cables are ultra quiet as well as "fast". Silent Source cables have the PRAT (pace, rhythm, and timing) of the very best cables on the market and also feature a huge soundstage.

Silent Source makes two levels of cables, the Signature level and the Music Reference. Both series of cables are flexible and very user friendly to install and make use of a "deep-cryo" treatment.

The Signature level cables utilize all copper conductors that are mechanically dampened and compete musically with many cables costing 3 and 4 times their price. Signature level interconnects and AC cables are in the $1000 price range, with Signature speaker cables at $1599/8ft pair. These cables "punch above their weight" and could be considered for even the most exotic systems. But for the best of the best, then there is ...

...the topline Music Reference cables are made from pure silver conductors. While many audio enthusiasts tend to associate silver conductors with the characteristics of being bright and devoid of harmonics, when the design of the cable starts with the idea of using all silver conductors, the sound can be just the opposite - more relaxed and having gobs of detail without a hint of brightness. The Music Reference Interconnects are in the $3600 price range, with companion speaker cables approaching $6000/8ft pair. The Music Reference AC cable costs $1599/2m.

Silent Source does not spend money on advertising or (apparently) on their website, but word is starting to spread about these very high performance cables. Take a look at the terrific online review of these cables.

More importantly the Cable Company is pleased to offer the full line of cables from Silent Source for in-home audition through our Cable Lending Library. Give us a call and we will be happy to arrange to get some of these truly distinct cables in your hands for you to try.

The New Shunyata Research Aeros Signal Cables

The Cable Company has always been a strong supporter of the many excellent products produced by Shunyata Research, so when we were asked to evaluate Shunyata's third generation of signal cables, their new Aeros line, we jumped at the opportunity.

Caelin Gabriel is the engineering maven behind all of Shunyata's designs. Before getting into the audio business about a decade ago, he served a stint at NSA, and also worked with ultra high speed computer networking. The Aeros line of interconnects and speaker cables are the newest beneficiaries of both his extensive experience in cable design, and his out of the box approach to the challenges inherent in signal transmission.

The Aeros signal cables utilize a dual helix design which minimizes capacitive reactance and low inductive reactance, which reduces the filtration effect of these cables. In simpler terms, the signal is delivered to the destination with less distortion and less editorialization by the cables, allowing the listener to hear more of the music.

In addition to this complex geometry, the new Aeros cables use Shunyata's unique "Cohergenic Conductors." This is an electromagnetic process that permanently aligns the conductor's molecules while the conductor is being processed. While the exact nature and processes related to Cohergenic Conductors are secret and proprietary to Shunyata Research, there is no denying the profound effect on signal transmission.

Finally, Shunyata applies its own Alpha Cryogenic process to all of the conductors and connectors in the Aeros series. All models are made with CDA certified copper conductors and represent some of the lowest inductance (<.25uh/ft) and capacitance (<.03nf/ft) measurements within the industry. What all of this means to you as an audiophile is that the Aeros cables gives you more of the music that your system is capable of.

There are three levels in the new Aeros series of cables - the Cirrus ($3000 interconnects and speaker cables), the Stratos ($5000 interconnects and speaker cables), and the topline Aurora ($7500 interconnects and speaker cables from $12000) .

For more information on the design, construction, materials, and technical information on the new Aeros cables, please visit Shunyata's website.

There is also an informative review on line from Marc Mickelson at Soundstage.

We encourage you to audition these unique, hand-wound, high performance cables from Shunyata Research. Give us a call and we will be happy to arrange to get some of these truly distinct cables in your hands for you to try. Don't forget about the brand new CX series power cords from Shunyata - we have every model in the Library, just waiting for a tryout in your system.
