"These are a few of our Favorite (Audio) Things" - Part 1 July 15, 2010
Our hobby is all about music and sound reproduction - the "sound" of music. From that standpoint, with apologies to Messrs. Rodgers and Hammerstein, we wanted to use this newsletter article to discuss a few of OUR favorite things in the audio realm. These are all products that we have tried and use in our own systems, and that we know will improve your system too.

Quantum Physics Noise Disrupters: System "Decongestant"

One of our favorite products, and one which works in every system, is the Quantum Physics "Noise Disrupter." Designed to reduce airborne EMI and RFI, the sonic effect of this product is to "decongest" the sound, improving both resolution and the imaging of the system as each instrument or voice emerges more cleanly from a darker background.

What are they??? The Disrupters, which are available in two sizes, consist of a sealed box with a proprietary combination of materials inside that have been specially treated to absorb locally emitted EMF and RFI noise. Frankly if you shake them, you would think you were holding a box full of rocks. Whatever, this product works every time!

Even when using the best power conditioners and dedicated circuits, there are electromagnetic fields and EMI and RFI radiation being generated by the components themselves when the system is in use. These will "leak" into other nearby components, causing smearing of the sound throughout the system. By placing the large Disrupters over the biggest offenders (transformers in the power amplifier/pre-amp and those switching power supplies in computers for those of you that use a computer for your digital audio source), enhanced resolution is revealed that is unlike any other product we've tested. The smaller Disrupters are designed for internal placement eg. on circuit boards, and are also effective when placed in the proximity of the laser/drive mechanism of a cd or dvd player.

The large Disrupters ( 6.5"W x 5.25"D x 1.5"H) list for $225 and the small Disrupters (2"H x 2.5"W x .75"H) list for $75 each.

Special offer for the month of July:
Large Disrupter - $185 ( regularly $225)
Small Disrupter - $65 (regularly $75)

Gutwire Notepad II

A less expensive product, with some of the performance attributes of the Noise Disrupter, comes from Gutwire of Canada. The Notepad II ($45) is a 5" x 7" molecular polymer gel filled "beanbag" designed to be used on top of your components. The material within the Notepad II absorbs RF and EMI, while at the same time it dampens resonance/vibrations. Because it is used on top of components, it will add mass to the device, which makes the footers used under the component more effective as well. Try some on top of your cd player, amplifier, preamplifier and/or dvd player - they are a very low cost, high value accessory.

Summer Special - 2 for $75.

HiFi Tuning Fuses
We have mentioned the HiFi-Tuning fuses in numerous articles in the past, but the fact is that some customers have dismissed out of hand the idea of a high quality fuse making a significant, audible improvement in their systems. The sonic improvement that comes as a result of installing these fuses into your cd player, DAC, preamplifier, amplifier and in some cases speakers is not subtle. In a high resolution system, the improvement can be just as significant as upgrading a power cord, but for a lot less money. There are now a number of component manufacturers using the HiFi Tuning fuses in their statement products and the reason is simple - the are made from the best materials, have consistent quality, and come in the widest variety of values and sizes. We also now have been provide with The World's Largest Fuse Measurements Report as of January 2010 in which an independent testing agency compared HiFi Tuning fuses to many of the other fuses on the market. Interesting reading!

Summer Sale prices for the HiFi Tuning fuses are:

$34.95 each for Small size, either SilverStar or Original Gold-plated - save $5.00!
$39.95 for the Large size Original Gold-plated - save $10.00!
$49.95 for the Large SilverStar fuses - save $10.00!

To order fuses you will need the following information which can be obtained by looking at the current fuse, or from the product manual, or by emailing the manufacturer:
1) physical size of the fuse (usually .75" or 1.25" = 20mm or 32mm)
2) amperage rating of the fuse
3) whether the fuse is a fast blow or slow blow type

Black Cat Cable's Veloce, $123
The next production run of the wildly successful Black Cat Veloce digital cable will be here soon. If you missed our recent email featuring this new product, the design is derived from the recently discontinued Stereovox model XV-2, which was something of a category-killer at $250/1m. Last year the XV-2 was upgraded to the no-holds-barred current reference model called XV-Ultra ($350/1m). At the same time the Stereovox name was changed to "Stereolab" for legal reasons.

The designer's most recent challenge was to produce a near state-of-the-art digital link that could sell for a song. The Black Cat Veloce is that cable, and the way it is being sold is a big part of the story.

Building the cable in only one length, 1.23m (48.5"), facilitates critical optimization at 75 ohms, and also importantly means that it can be produced in lower cost, longer production runs. Use of Chris Sommovigo's popular universal BNC/RCA connector further supports this standardization. Add to that the skinnier than usual margins both for the manufacturer and for the dealers, and you end up with a $123 "direct price" - something of a gift to the audiophile!

A Special $325/4 Cathedral Sound Acoustic Panel "RoomPak."

As acknowledged in their Stereophile write-up, these panels are uniquely effective on deep bass standing waves, and quite remarkable in their broadband impact, especially in light of their small size: 11" x 16" x 2" (28 x 41 x 5 cm) and ease of placement.

The Panels are most effective if used symmetrically in the room. By this we mean either one in every corner, or two in every corner.

To make it easy we are offering sets of 4 off-white or black 'Panels in a "RoomPak" at a special price of $325/4, a 10% savings from the usual retail price for 2 pairs.

In smallish rooms, or for low volume systems, or systems with restricted bass response, a Panel in each corner will do it. For larger rooms, and especially for systems played at high volume with big bass, two in each corner is the ticket.

Vibration Control Devices - Component Footers
Every stereo component, no matter how exotic or expensive it might be, will benefit from using a set of footers. The benefits come in the form of reduced distortion, increased clarity , better spatial presentation, and better dynamics. Here are what we consider to be the best "high value" designs:

Vibrapods ($5.99 each) and Vibrapod Cones at $7.99 are the least expensive, effective footers that we have found on the market. The Vibrapod Cones serve to couple the component using a steel ball bearing to the Vibrapod material, and turn vibrational energy into heat. Use the Vibrapods alone, but better yet, combine Vibrapods with the Vibrapod Cones to make what we call "Super-Vibrapods."

The Symposium Rollerblock Jr's at $169/set of 3 work on the principal of converting vibrational energy from the component into work (motion) by using extremely low friction cup and bearing principals. Both halves of the Rollerblock body are designed to tightly couple to either the shelf or the component, with the bearing in-between. As vibration occurs in the component, the bearing moves freely and dissipates the energy. Like most resonance control devices, these footers are the most effective under source components, but are sturdy enough for any component - even under speakers.

Stillpoints ERS Cloth
An effective improvement that you can make for a very low cost is to use some of this ERS cloth in and around your system. The $24.95 ERS cloth is a metals-coated carbon and polyester fiber -based 8 1/2"x11" - for lack of a better term - "paper." This ERS (Emi & Rfi Suppression) cloth can be used in many ways in and around a system to soak up and disperse both RF and EMI. Cut a small 3"x 5" piece and place it over your cd player, transport, or DAC - you will hear changes in the playback that change the soundstage, imaging, and resolution. We recommend that you tape a whole sheet of ERS cloth to the inside cover of your electrical panel for a cleaner, more dynamic sound. There are a number of cable manufacturers that use this product around the inside housing for their power cords to get rid of RF and EMI, but customers can do this as well by taping a piece around the outside of the plug or iec. We do not recommend that you use ERS cloth inside of your components because it is somewhat conductive and could cause a short, but experiment anywhere on the outside of your components. We have also found that a small piece of ERS cloth under or on top of the cable or satellite box can greatly improve the picture quality..
