Along side the hobbyist part of our business, the best and most gratifying thing we do here is our annual August "Summer Against Hunger" fundraiser for CARE.
This year contributions from The Cable Company, and our vendors, customers, and an anonymous donation totaled $28,224.62. Once again this year CARE was able to identify 10:1 matching funds yielding total program donations of $310,470.81.
Thanks to all of you who participated by purchasing products in August. For every one dollar you spent with us in August, even on used products, at least $1.05 is being donated to CARE. For purchases of our sponsoring vendors' products, it is $2.10. Your buck gets a $2.10 contribution for humanitarian causes - not bad!
Our contribution this year is being earmarked by CARE to support a small-scale Irrigation project in Liberia, where yields are typically sub par, and over dependence on a single crop, rice, poses an economic risk and leaves families without adequate nutritional variety. Domestic vegetable production is meager; a staggering 80 percent of vegetables in Liberia come from abroad. To increase yields, some farmers resort to destructive slash-and-burn practices, ruining fragile forests.
Producing crops in lowland areas is a viable alternative to encroaching upon forests. CARE plans to help farmers increase lowland production by establishing four small-scale irrigation systems. The project will provide irrigation equipment, high-value seed, inputs, and tools. Through farmer field schools, the project will intensify training efforts on a range of topics, including production techniques, value addition, food processing, and marketing.
We are proud to assist in the funding for this project. Thank you for your support!
For our customers in the USA, have a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday.
