Difficult Question:
Who makes the world's best D to A converters?

That question will start an audiophile debate every time.

We would respectfully submit that one of the top contenders would have to be the stunning top model from German manufacturer, T+A, the $37k SDV 3100

But you know what they say about the "law of diminishing returns." We find it simply remarkable just how much of the brilliant performance of the statement unit the manufacturer squeezes into the subject of this article, the extraordinarily high performance and high value model called DAC 8 DSD ($4450), which frankly smoked our previous (American-made) reference product in the under $10k category.

Same as in their ultra high end DAC's, the Stereophile "Recommended Components" Class A+ rated DAC 8 DSD uses two distinct sets of D/A converters:  PCM signals are processed via eight 32-bit converters in a double symmetrical configuration, while DSD signals are never converted to PCM, instead handled with 1-bit conversion. Add in a very fine analog volume control before the RCA and XLR outputs at the back end to allow this DAC to also be used as a high performance preamp to drive amps or active speakers directly without the requirement for a separate preamplifier.

Rather than go into more design detail here we would refer you to our website using the DAC 8 DSD link above, but more importantly would recommend that if you are interested in hearing this overachiever in your system at home, contact us to book an evaluation sample from our Cable Company Library. You are in for a treat!
