New Focal Stellia Closed Back Headphones and Arche DAC/Amp Premier This Weekend in NYC

Focal's newest headphone is a Closed Back Circum-Aural design called Stellia ($3000). Borrowing tech from their topline, open back Utopia ($4000), the challenge is to create a set of  'cans with the openness and transparency of the best open-backs in a closed-back design.

Focal is also releasing their first headphone DAC/amp, called Arche ($2499), developed for Focal by Micromega.

Our headphone specialist, Ethan Wood, will be stopping by the CanJam Show in New York this weekend to check these out. Here is what we know so far:

  1. Stellia uses a new Beryllium dome driver with a copper voice coil and leather headband similar to Utopia.
  2. Stellia is a low impedance (35ohm) design intended to be useful both at home and also with portables, the kit comes with 2 headphone cables, one 1m with mini plug for portable use and the other 3m with 4 pin XLR to use at home.
  3. The Arche DAC section contains two balanced AK 4490 converters each with a dedicated regulated power supply. These converters will process 384kHz PCM format signals as well as DSD 256.
  4. The amplifier circuitry is a pure Class A, dual mono design with each channel pushing 1watt. Interestingly Arche includes presets to ideally match electrically to every set of Focal headphones. The front panel lets you connect up to two pairs of headphones via a 1/4” stereo jack and a balanced 4-pin XLR.

If these products sound good in NYC, you can expect to find these in our High End Headphone Library for in-home audition soon!
