Product Launches at RMAF:
The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest ("RMAF") in Denver each October has become an increasingly important venue for new product announcements. For this and our upcoming customer emails we will be featuring important new products from RMAF.

Time will tell, but if we had to guess what will be the MOST important new products seen at this year's RMAF, our money would be on the new room acoustic products from Synergistic Research: the button-sized "HFT" (High Frequency Transducer), and the companion "FEQ" (Frequency Equalizer).
Synergistic Research's "HFT" (High Frequency Transducer):

The holy grail in room acoustics could be thought of as a broad band acoustic equalization product that is nearly invisible. Let's add in - inexpensive.

Is this that product?

The HFT's ($75 each, or 5 for $299) are tiny transducers that convert high frequency harmonics to sympathetic acoustic resonances in order to create what might be called an "acoustic envelope" surrounding your music system.

Drawing from the SR website:

"The sound of a room is literally made up of hundreds, if not thousands of resonators all reacting to the energy your stereo creates. Each piece of furniture, the walls, the ceiling, equipment racks, light fixtures, knick knacks and even your speaker cabinets and the enclosures of your components all resonate out of tune with the music your system is trying to recreate. Think of it this way. Your room and its furniture are like one big instrument with 500 strings. Every time your speakers create a note these strings are being excited and that's the problem, not one of those 500 strings are in tune."

"You see harmonics are interconnected so when you effect harmonics, even those beyond the limits of human hearing, you also affect lower frequency harmonics we can hear. HFTs literally cancel harmonic noise on any surface they are placed."

These small metal cylinders are attached to walls and other surfaces (see below) using the supplied "stick tak," or any other sticky means you may choose (3m "Command" Mini Refill Strips are a good choice which will not mar any surfaces). We recommend approaching their application using sets of 5 in the following sequence:

Getting started with a set of 5: HFT first stage application to the wall behind the speakers:
...will result in a wider, deeper and taller sound stage with better clarity to the instruments and voices within the sound stage.

(Note to car audio buffs: try this application on the windshield of your car - really!)

(Note to all users: these products can complement existing acoustic treatment products in your room. For testing, just leave in place your existing acoustic treatments. For further testing you may want to try removing existing treatments, especially any highly absorbent products, which may no longer be needed.) .

Adding a 2nd set of 5: HFT second stage application to the other walls and ceiling:
...further enhances clarity and sound-staging as the noise floor is further reduced. A significant improvement in bass impact and definition also becomes apparent. We begin here with the front wall installation. Place 1 HFT at a low height between your speakers.
- HFT second stage: Rear Wall application
Place 1 HFT on your listening room's Rear wall Center at a 6 ft+ height.
- HFT second stage: Left Wall application
Place 1 HFT on the Left side wall at mid-height 1/2 distance between your speakers and listening position.
- HFT second stage: Right Wall application
Place 1 HFT on the Right side wall at mid-height 1/2 distance between your speakers and listening position.
- HFT second stage: Ceiling application
Place 1 HFT at the center of your ceiling 1/2 distance between your speakers and listening position.
Adding a 3rd set of 5: HFT third stage enhancements to front and rear walls:
...is the final step in treating the acoustic space itself (but more follows..) using the HFT's, to further enhance the holographic sense of instruments in real space.

Place 1 HFT on your Front wall mid-height between center HFT and Right Speaker and place 1 HFT on your Front wall mid-height between center HFT and Left Speaker.

- HFT Level III: Rear Wall application
Place 1 HFT on your room's Rear wall low center.
Adding 4 more HFT's to each speaker cabinet, along with one HFT on each digital component, completes the maximum installation for the HFT's alone.

This final step in the HFT application magnifies all of the previous acoustic impact. The diagram shows application to a dynamic speaker. Note that whether front or back-ported, an HFT placed near the port is important. For panel speakers (electrostatics, ribbons, etc.) place an HFT on each side of the frame surrounding the drive elements: top, bottom, left and right. Subwoofers will benefit from the same treatment as dynamic speakers.

Which leads us to the "FEQ" (Frequency Equalizer):
The FEQ ($750) is a stand-alone product, like the HFT's, but used in combination they are highly complementary, each enhancing the effectiveness of the other.

The FEQ, a small, lightweight box, plugs into the wall, actually using up two outlets, one for AC power, and the other for a special noise grounding circuit. Centered between the speakers near the wall behind them on the floor, the FEQ mitigates the negative impact of airborn RFI and EMI in the listening room.

Drawing from the SR website: "The other menace negatively affecting the sound of your listening room is RFI and EMI created by among other things, Wi Fi, cell phones, florescent and LED lighting, basically anything and everything in your home with an on off switch. "

"Enter the Active FEQ, an ultra low frequency RF pulse generator that acts as a low frequency dither to overpower the ambient RFI and EMI fields in your listening room."

"In fact one FEQ will improve an average listening room all by itself even when no HFTs are present. But the real magic begins when you place an Active FEQ with passive HFTs in the same room. Now all HFTs in your listening room are excited by the ULF pulse generated by the FEQ which acts as an amplifier for the HFTs. "
- FEQ Placement Illustrations:
Place 1 FEQ between the speakers toward the back wall.
- FEQ polarity and Ground Plane

Plug power supply in with the right polarity: Cord going in the direction of the ground hole.

Plug Ground plane wire into the FEQ and AC wall plug into the AC outlet.

We understand that this is a lot to swallow...
...which is why we encourage you to try these products at home, risk free, either through the usual Cable Library audition process, or just purchase these products with a special 30 day satisfaction-guaranteed return option. Easy to do for any of our readers, anywhere in the world, with these small and easy to ship products.

We like to brag that our Cable Company customers are the most open-minded and hands-on of all audiophiles. All we can do, as always, is encourage you to trust your ears and listen for yourself: the only risk is for those who refuse to try something new.

You can start with just one set of 5 HFT's to get your feet wet for $299, or try the FEQ first for $750, or go large out of the gate with all 4 stages of HFT (5 sets of 5 HFTs) plus an FEQ.

However you choose to proceed, you won't be disappointed. We guarantee it!
