New in the Hi-End Headphone Library
August 15, 2012
As August flies by, and the donations add up for CARE in our Summer Against Hunger fundraiser, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide an update on new additions to our Hi-End Headphone Library. We launched this part of our Library service about 6 months ago, and it has been nothing but fun! If you haven't treated yourself yet to an audition of some of the very best sound available at any price, you may want to think about auditioning a top class headphone system.

We continue to add headphones and headphone amps throughout the range of available products, focusing in this issue on new additions topping out at $1000. In the headphone world even at this price level you can approach state-of-the-art, which is a big difference compared to the costs of top end stereo systems. That is a big part of the fun with headphones.

FOCAL Spirit One Headphones
The premier French loudspeaker company, FOCAL, has released their first Headphone, the Spirit One. Designed to be used on the go, the first Focal hi-fi headphones provide excellent sound isolation. With 20 db of external noise rejection, this level of isolation allows the music to be enjoyed despite ambient noise. The Spirit One is a high performance Circumaural (around-the-ear), closed-back, headphone offering an impressive set of technical features. The 40 mm Mylar/titanium drivers are rated at 32 ohms impedance and are highly efficient, so this headphone can play as loud as you'd safely want from a phone or portable music player.

Offering robust aluminum construction, with a two year warranty, the Focal Spirit One's are an audiophile headphone that is worthy of the title "Road Warrior". The Focal Spirit One's offer a level of sonic performance that belies their modest $279 price tag. A Supremely comfortable, light weight Circumaural closed back design that includes in-line control of iDevices. The Focal Spirit One's may be the music lovers' ideal traveling companion. Sennheiser HD-700
Sennheiser's newest headphones, the HD 700's, ($999.95) are equipped with Sennheiser's most advanced, cutting-edge acoustical concepts. The ear cups house precision 40 mm Duofol transducers, which are positioned to direct sound at an angle, rather than firing directly into your ears. This is done to mimic the acoustic feel of a real performance in a real room, and not to invoke the experience of having speakers strapped to your head. The flow of air behind the moving diaphragms inside the ear cups is vented through holes in the magnets, which minimizes turbulence and ultimately improves sound quality. The steel mesh outside the transducer is shaped to optimize the acoustic sum of the headphones, while still enabling the passage of air. Even the multilayer headband of the HD 700 is designed to share the acoustic duties of the components by suppressing dips in low-frequency sound.

Like Sennheiser's tour de force top-of-the-line HD 800 headphones, ($1499.95) the entire frame of the HD 700 dampens vibration and eliminates unwanted resonance. Because of its open-back architecture, the HD 700s are best enjoyed in a controlled listening environment with as little ambient noise as possible. It's also best to drive them with a good-quality headphone amplifier to really bring out the depth and detail of your music.

The HD 700's offer a large portion of the performance of the reference HD 800's at 2/3 the cost. The HD 700's are both lighter and physically smaller than the HD 800's making them a transportable headphone. A perfect companion for use with the Alpha Design Labs's Stride or Cruise Portable Headphone Amplifiers (see below).

All of these products are available for in-home audition through our Hi-End Headphone Lending Library.
Centrance DACmini CX DAC/Headphone Amplifier
We are pleased to report that we have added the Centrance DACmini CX ($795) to our High End Headphone lending Library. The DACmini CX is not just another USB D/A Converter. Its precision-engineered audiophile circuitry is designed to elevate your system's sound quality to a new level. Featuring 192kHz/24-bit performance over SPDIF and 96kHz/24-bit driverless connectivity over USB, an analog input, and both a Class "A" headphone, and line-level outputs, DACmini is an extremely flexible device that can easily connect to such sources as a Mac desktop or laptop (including Mac mini), Windows desktop or laptop, music server, iPod/iPhone, Apple TV, Airport Express, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Squeezebox, to name just a few, providing a variety of ways to create an audiophile playback system.

DACmini is styled to stack perfectly with an Apple Mac mini, making for an exceptional small-footprint music server. However, connectivity is not limited to Mac. DACmini works with Windows and iPad just as well. Improving upon their successful portable "DACport," ($399.95) the DACmini is a great way to listen to High Definition music at home.

* Driverless USB implementation featuring full 24/96 resolution
* Virtually unmeasurable jitter, for amazing clarity and definition
* Exceptional noise immunity via a galvanically-isolated design
* Headphone amplifier offers clarity, soundstage and no listening fatigue
* Machined aluminum chassis looks great on a desktop or equipment shelf

The Centrance DACmini CX is an ideal companion piece to many of the high performance headphones that are available for audition through our Hi-End Headphone Lending Library. Borrow a DACmini CX to hear what you've been missing.

Alpha Design Labs GT40 Phono Stage/DAC/Headphone amp
Alpha Design Labs is the component side of Furutech. The Alpha Design Labs GT40 is a half-sized component with feature combinations that few full-size components have been able to offer.

First of all, the GT 40 is both a digital-to-analog, and an analog-to-digital converter that operates thru USB type B interface at resolution up to 24/96kH. It can be used to play music files, or to stream music from a computer, OR to send digitized analog files to a computer for storage on a hard disk. This latter feature is especially useful because the GT40 also has a built in MM/MC phono stage, so you can rip your vinyl collection to the hard disk of your computer via USB with one single device.

If that were not enough, the GT40 also has a high quality headphone amplifier built in, which makes it interesting for our Hi-End Headphone Library customers, and can also be used as an analog preamplifier with its variable outputs. At $549, the GT40 represents a very flexible, high quality, multitask product that makes getting your feet wet in computer audio and/or headphone systems very easy and affordable.

Available for in-home audition through the Library.
Alpha Design Labs Esprit /DAC/ADC/Preamp/Headphone amp
For those customers that are looking for even higher quality performance with similar functionality to the GT40 with the addition of SPDIF and Toslink inputs, or for those who want to decode digital surround/multi channel signals, Furutech offers the new Esprit DAC. To use an automotive analogy, the GT40 is the stripped-down sports racer of the group and the Esprit is a faster, more luxurious model.

The Esprit uses the very high performance 24-bit/192kHz Wolfson WM8716 DAC, and for the ADC conversion, the CIRRUS LOGIC CS5361 24-bit/192kHz converter with Multi-bit architecture at 114dB dynamic range. At $999 this is one of the better performing DAC's for computer audio, or for upgrading your CD player or DVD player to a higher level of performance via SPDIF connection.

Also available for in-home audition through the Library.
Alpha Design Labs Stride USB DAC and Portable Headphone Amplifier
Want to listen to your high quality headphones on the road with your portable music device or laptop? The ADL Stride is one of the options you might want to consider. A small, portable, rechargeable (via USB) headphone amplifier that also happens to contain a USB DAC, so it can do double duty as your computer's DAC in the office. A unique combination of features, performance, and flexibility in a small, convenient package for $399.

Available for in-home audition through the Library.
Alpha Design Cruise High Performance Headphone Amp and USB DAC
Or step up to the new Alpha Design Labs Cruise , which brings an even higher level of both headphone and USB DAC performance for the discerning headphone and/or computer audio listener. With an upgraded DAC circuit, and the ability to drive headphones from 12 to 600 ohms, at $549, the Cruise sets a higher standard for this type of device for today's on-the-go music lover.

Also available for in-home audition through the Library.
