Synergistic Research took the radical step in the mid-1990's of introducing AC powered "Active Shielding" for their high end cables. Active Shielding has evolved over the years, and now the culmination of the "dream" vacuum tube-based Active Shielding power supply is a reality.
What is Active Shielding? In it's simplest terms, Active Shielding is a noise reduction system that eliminates electromagnetic and other forms of noise-generating interference. It requires an AC/DC power supply to be connected to pigtails running from the cables. The basic "Mini Power Coupler," a "wall wart" power supply, is included in the cost of the Active cables. An in depth History of Active Shielding is available on the Synergistic Research website.
Enter the Enigma. Ted Denny, the lead designer at Synergistic, had been a "tube roller" from way back. Hearing the sonic differences between rectifier tubes in various tube circuits was an intellectual catalyst for later experimentation with vacuum tubes in his Active Shielding cable circuits, which are also DC based.
More on the development of the Enigma appears on the Synergistic site, but to keep it brief, the Enigma actually allows the character of the very special vacuum tubes used in it's driver circuit to overlay the sound of the music system! Yes, really, confirmed and verified. Strange days indeed.
Two Enigmas. There are two versions of the Enigma available, the single tube "standard," and the two tube "LE" (pictured). Both units also incorporate a solid state driver stage, which always powers the Active Shielding for any connected AC cables (because they like it better this way), and can also be used on the signal cables, eg. for background listening. But switch in the tube circuit and things get really interesting...
The basic tube in both Enigmas is a WW2 era Western Electric 323A. Exhibiting the classic "Western Electric sound" with intimacy, detail, air, and the most natural of midranges, this is what tube sound is all about.
The "LE" version of the Enigma adds a second vacuum tube option to the WE 323A that anchors the "standard" Enigma. This is a rare GE Tungar tube from the early 1930's. This option was made available due to the sheer sonic glory and transparency exhibited by the Tungar. The Enigma is, afterall, designed and built to be a last stop, "classic" -the ultimate Active Shielding power supply - and Synergistic's Denny could not resist having his cake and eating it too. So with the Enigma LE you have: the WE tube for intimate, smaller scale works, and the Tungar for big, bombastic orchestral works, or atmospheric electronica.
In keeping with a final "statement" product, the manufacturer has also gone cost no object in the build quality. The result is a $5000 price tag for the standard Enigma, and $8000 for the two tube Enigma LE. But for now through March 31 only, we are offering a $1000 discount on the standard Enigma and a $2000 discount on the Enigma LE for preorders.
Yes, we will have the Enigma in the Library for in-home audition, but the window on this special offer is too small for that. This special offer is for Active Shielding true believers who already know there is an Enigma in their future.
