1. Cable Research Labs Bronze Series Bundle
|
|
For a company that received a 2008 Product of the Year award as well as a 2009 Editor's Choice Award from The Absolute Sound, CRL is still an relatively unfamiliar name to many hobbyists. In order to get their products into the hands of as many people as possible, this year at RMAF, CRL announced a package (or "bundle") that is unique in the industry.
The CRL Bronze Series Bundle provides for two pairs of Bronze series interconnects, either RCA or XLR, in any lengths up to 3M per pair along with a pair of the CRL Bronze series speaker cables (either stereo or bi-wire, spades or bananas) up to 12 feet in length, all for one very attractive price of $895. (Individual pairs of interconnects n this series cost $599/pair for up to 3M, which gives you an idea of the relative value of the "bundle!")
This CRL Bronze Bundle is an incredible value that gives the hobbyist the opportunity to get a matched cable "loom" into the system at one time to take advantage of the synergy and coherence that often comes from using the same design of cables throughout the system. The Bronze cables work equally well with tubes or solid state designs and in systems from entry level to state of the art.
The Bronze series interconnects are a hand-built silver/stranded copper hybrid design that uses lead free solder terminated with top quality RCA's or XLR's. Quality terminations are a CRL specialty.
The Bronze series speaker cables are an all stranded copper design, also handmade in either stereo or bi-wire configuration, and again terminated using lead free solder.
If you have been thinking about upgrading your system with new cables, or have friends that are ready for high end cables, the CRL Bronze Series Bundle is a way to get some very good cables, in the lengths and termination you need, for not a lot of money. We have the entire line up of CRL cables available in our Cable Lending Library for home audition - contact your audio consultant at The Cable Company to make arrangements.

2. The New Devilsound DAC V2.1
|
|
One of the most interesting surprises from the show was the all in one USB DAC from Devilsound. The DAC is actually built into the digital cable that goes from your pc or other USB device to a pair of ETI (Eichmann) Silver Bullet RCA connectors. That's all there is to it - no power cords, no extra shelf on the rack, just a cable with a USB connector on one end, a pair of excellent RCA's on the other, and a built in, high quality DAC.
The Devilsound DAC will decode digital signals recorded at 32, 44.1, and 48kHz with no upsampling or oversampling employed. The DAC gets its raw power from the USB port, regenerates that power and provides it to the circuitry of the DAC. This results in very clean, articulated, powerful bass along with open, airy, natural high frequencies. And if you are into internet radio, but don't like the way it sounds on a high rez system - "Ouch, my ears!" - you will find this to be a perfect compliment .
Many of our customers have been curious about getting their feet wet with computer audio playback, but have been reluctant to start because of the high cost and/or the complexities of hookup: usually USB cable to some sort of converter to a DAC. The Devilsound DAC addresses these issues and at a very modest price, $399, with a cable length of up to 17 feet when using the supplied extender cable.
Devilsound is also planning to release a premium USB DAC configured in a similar fashion, hopefully at CES in January. The as yet unnamed Premium DAC will incorporate the asynchronous clock circuit developed by Gordon Rankin and used in the newest, best USB DACs from both Wavelength Audio ($1800) and Ayre ($2500). Obviously, the premium model from Devilsound will be more costly to manufacturer and will have a higher price tag than the V2.1's modest $399, but we expect it to cost well under $1000; significantly less than the other products using this circuitry. Stay tuned for more information on this one!

3. Rega announces their own "Cash for Clunkers" program.
|
Rega has announced their own "Cash for Clunkers" program. Rega dealers can offer their customers a trade in allowance for their old cd players, working or not towards a brand new Rega Apollo or Saturn player.
The Rega players have been widely reviewed over the past few years by the audio press, and both the Saturn and Apollo have been listed as being at the top of their respective price classes by many audio writers. Both players feature top loading transports that are made to Rega's specifications, Wolfson DAC's, and other premium parts and circuits that make them sound so good.
The trade in allowance towards a Rega Apollo (regularly $995) is $150, making the sale price $845. The trade in allowance towards a Rega Saturn cd player (regularly $2395) is $600, making the sale price only $1795.
NOTE: Due to territorial restrictions we are unable to sell this player to everyone in all areas. Please contact us and we'll let you know if we are able to ship one to you.

4. Synergistic Research's New Galileo MPC introduction.
|
|
Synergistic Research has never been a company that rests on their past accomplishments, and is continually striving to achieve the best performance possible for their products. This year at RMAF, Synergistic displayed a preproduction sample of their uber-expensive, bleeding-edge-of-the-art (as J-10 might say) Galileo series of cables, the new Basic Acoustic Room Treatment (ART) system (details upcoming in a future newsletter), and the new Galileo MPC.
The new Synergistic Research Galileo MPC upgrades the Active Shielding for Synergistic products incorporating this system, and starts by delivering a significant boost in low frequency impact and control that sounds like a half to a full octave increase in bass response. Intimacy, detail, air, and the naturalness of the midrange also take a step towards reality. I In fact the designer feels that the combination of the Galileo MPC + their QLS strip with a Tesla T2 AC cable to the wall is the best Active Shielding product they have EVER devised, and with the benchmark product being the sexy vacuum tube power supply "Enigma," that is saying something.
What is Active Shielding? In it's simplest terms, Active Shielding is a noise reduction system that eliminates electromagnetic and other forms of noise-generating interference. It requires an AC/DC power supply to be connected to pigtails running from the cables. The basic "Mini Power Coupler," a "wall wart" power supply, is included in the cost of the Active cables. An in depth History of Active Shielding is available on the Synergistic Research website.
If you already own any of the Synergistic Research Active shielded cables, or the excellent Powercell AC line conditioner (not just the Tesla series), you can substantially increase the performance instantly by upgrading the standard MPC to one of the new Galileo MPC's for only $399 for the 120v US version and $599 for the 230V International version .
You can read about the technical details on our website, but essentially this is a hand built, all discrete component device that has been Quantum Tunneled throughout. The demonstration at the show was impressive enough that we immediately placed an order for Galileo MPC's for our Cable Lending Library, so that YOU can hear the improvement for YOURSELF.
Christmas List Alert: no doubt, if you have Synergistic Research cables, or a Powercell, his is something you will want!

5. The Cable Company's Booth featuring the Audio Desk Systeme Vinyl Cleaner is the Hit of the Show!
|
Since this is OUR show report we must mention that at the RMAF Show this year, the Audio Desk Systeme Vinyl Cleaner in OUR BOOTH was one of the most interesting, and talked about products. We were frequently 3 deep with analog enthusiasts who wanted to see the machine in action, and ask probing questions. From morning until night, we cleaned LP's which ended up being used in exhibit spaces throughout the show. Love that Vinyl Cleaner!
