Announcing the AktiMate Mini Active Loudspeaker speaker system from Australia. AktiMate is a speaker system that is ideal for use with iPods, wireless devices, or any other source you can think of.
Both the tweeter and mid/bass driver are licensed from respected British Manufacturer Epos. The amplifier is built by Creek Audio, and the volume control is Burr-Brown. In a world of slick plastic boxes, the AktiMate system truly stands out. Consisting of the shielded Epos drivers and a Creek A/B amplifier, complete with torrodial power transformer, the 12” tall speakers will produce 50 Hz with only 1.5 db roll off. Very impressive performance for a mini monitor, outperforming some small speakers that cost more, even without a built in amplifier.
Impressive engineering and bass, but how do they sound? Anyone familiar with the Epos and Creek will recognize their signature here. Think very accessible, enjoyable, with great warmth and a surprising amount of resolution. The famous British rhythm and pacing is here, with very good drive. The speakers have a good soul. We have enjoyed them, but what is interesting is how much even non-audiophiles have liked them. Ever have anyone not involved in our corner of the world listen to your system, and not seem to fully “get it”? Your friends or significant other will enjoy the AktiMate as much as you will.
Don’t consider this a high-end Jr. type of system, one of those systems that is close, but falls short because of various deficiencies. Instead, the AktiMate is more of a fun system for audiophiles. It just does nothing wrong. Unpretentious and a little forgiving of the source, these speakers are perfectly designed for their intended purpose of being used with an iPod or other MP3 player. They sound great running off a WiFi based remote source like an Apple Airport Express or any of the Windows equivalents, but they could be used in any number of ways really, including as a primary system in a smaller room.
The AktiMate speakers have an iPod dock on the top of the active speaker (the other speaker draws it’s power from this one), and a remote that controls the iPod. The iPod also charges when you are using it, and if it has a video out, the AktiMate system can be connected to a video monitor, to view pictures, while again, using the remote. RCA and mini jack inputs are available, along with the video output RCA output is included to allow the easy addition of a subwoofer, or another pair of AktiMates.
You don’t need to bother with "sweet spot" marks on the floor and your favorite set up discs. Just place these speakers anywhere you like, use even the cheapo supplied cables and you will have enjoyable sound in minutes. If the AktiMate system were a sports car, the Mini-Cooper would be a very close match. Not expensive, but still good fun and performance in a small package. And like tires on the little car, cables here make a big difference. If, like many of us, you have a few good cables in the back of your closet (a power cord, pair of interconnects, and a speaker cable, you only need one) that have been all but forgotten, you will see much improved performance. This system really does respond to cable upgrades, but on the other hand, everything you need to get started comes in the box.
