Best New Speakers - Reference 3A Grand Veena
We don't often mention the components that we use in our Ultra Systems sound rooms in our email newsletters because only a small percentage of our customers have the ability to hop in the car and come up for a listen.  Occasionally, however, we get something into our showroom that is such an outstanding performer that it deserves to be brought to the attention of all of our customers both near and far.
One such product is the Grand Veena Speaker system from Reference 3A.  Reference 3A, now manufacturing in Canada, has been in business for decades. They are probably best known (up till now anyway) for their excellent MM DeCapo monitor speakers, which have been in production for many years. This is a well-regarded and much reviewed speaker that was designed for audio systems where floor space is limited.  They are oriented towards tube amplification, and are still acclaimed as one of the best sounding, and most musical stand mounted speakers available anywhere near their $2990/pair price.

In 2007 Reference 3A unveiled the Grand Veena speakers as their flagship speaker system.  Sharing a  family name and cabinet shape with the considerably smaller 2 way Veena model, which was introduced a couple of years earlier, the Grand Veena is an elegant floor standing speaker that features a 5 driver array of speakers - (2) 8" woofers, a 7" midrange driver, a silk dome tweeter, and a Murata ceramic super-tweeter.  At 90 db efficiency, the Grand Veena is able to be driven with virtually any amplifier, but sonically favors vacuum tubes. The Grand Veena design incorporates super-exotic Bybee speaker filters. The cabinets are well-braced, and have a fine furniture finish.

Technology is great, but the real story of the Grand Veena is the performance.  From the moment we  first set them up, we have been hugely impressed with the quality of the sound that they produce.  Using a wide range of electronics, the Grand Veenas have been always engaging - one of those (few) speakers that invite you to sit down and enjoy whatever your favorite music might be.  When one of our local customers brought his Art Audio Jota 300B tube amplifier (20 wpc) to hear with the Grand Veenas everyone in the front and back-offices came into the sound room because of the wonderful, engaging, inviting sound quality.

We are, apparently, not the only ones to marvel at the performance of the Grand Veenas - Harry Pearson of the Absolute Sound has also been impressed with this speaker. He writes, "Yes, this is now and will be in the future considered a classic of its kind. It is, purely and simply, a great loudspeaker." You can read his full commentary on the Grand Veena which appeared in the January 2008 issue of TAS.

If you have a chance you should hear these speakers. The Grand Veena should be on the short list for any music lover considering a new state-of-the-art speaker, especially tube lovers with modest output amplifiers.  At $7995/pair for the standard finishes ($8795 for the Piano Black finish), the Grand Veenas are certainly not cheap on the one hand, but they are a stone cold bargain on the other hand, outperforming many a "reference speaker" at several times their price. If you are considering much more expensive speakers, don't sneer at the "only 4 figure" price. There's at least 5 figures of music in there!

For more information on this fine speaker, you can visit Reference 3A's website.
Best iPod cable:
Did you know that there is one brand of iPod cables with a distinct advantage over all others that we have seen to this point? CablePro has developed a cable design using the Dock connection, rather that he headphone jack, that is sure to improve the audio performance from your iPod. The breakthrough, common to all three of the CablePro iPod cables, is the Dock connection at the source end. Connecting directly to the Dock connector, instead of the common practice of using the output designed for headphones, bypasses the inexpensive op-amps circuitry that is used to control the volume through the iPod. Using the Dock connection you will be able to run the unattenuated output of your iPod directly into your home or car stereo, or anything else that has a volume control.

Your sound will be more dynamic with improved clarity and a noticeable reduction in grain. The songs will sound more like music, and your iPod may become more than just a take-along source for your favorite tunes. Even though we are not recommending that you replace your reference CD player, we can’t help but notice that many of our customers are relying more and more on iPods and we are glad to offer this new idea to improve the experience.

The $149 Panorama PDock is the top of the line in terms of sonic purity. The Earcandy v.2 Dock cable is a  more affordable version, and the Earcandy Lite EL Dock at the same $119 price, is for applications where maximum flexibility is required.

Digistrobo: $125 Special offer for Best Turntable Stobe.

Digitrobo:  This is the new must-have accessory for analog lovers with a variable speed turntables.  Although you can use with the included disc riding on top of the platter like any other speed strobe such as the venerable KAB Speedstrobe, the beauty of the Digistrobo is that you can  affix a strip of included reflective tape on your LP clamp (if you use one) or on  the edge of the platter to allow you to check speed while the record is playing! This is more convenient, and also allows you to account for stylus drag. Either way you do it, this gives you a very accurate digital readout on the handheld unit.

As an anal analog lover with a tweaky turntable that I often find drifts a little on the rpm's, I really like this product. Even though I have used the KAB strobe for years, this is just more convenient.  No need to stop the music, remove, put on the strobe disc, then go back to the record. Mo' better.

Regular $159, special intro offer $125 until May 15, 2008. Just enter Special Offer Code: x508STROBE in the "comments" section of our Express Order Form if ordering through our website shopping cart, or mention this email special to your Cable Company consultant.

Latest reviews of favorite HiFi-Tuning fuses and Cathedral Sound Acoustic Panels.

This recent headline in TheStreet.com has to make any high-ender smile:

"New Fuse Makes Stereo Sound Fantastic"
Article by Gary Krakow, TheStreet.com's senior technology correspondent

Here is an excerpt:
"The fuse makes the largest change I've ever heard in my home stereo equipment. Currently, I'm testing a great-sounding system from Resolution Audio (I'll tell you more soon). The system sounded very good with the cheapo fuse. With the HiFi-Tuning device, the system is world-class. The difference is anything but subtle.  I've heard similar differences with older Quad hi-fi gear. Changing to the HiFi-Tuning fuse changed the sound of my system -- all for the better.  And, I've gotten similar results when changing the fuse in my Sharp flat-screen TV. Colors and sound were both improved -- all by changing one small fuse."

And in the Audiophile press, a great new review on the marvelous Cathedral Sound Acoustic Panels

As Moreno Mitchell writes in Stereotimes.com about these tiny wonders:

"...after a few hours of critical listening, I could report that these panels are amazing, especially for their size, the Cathedral Sound Room Dampening Panels provided more obvious improvements than any other acoustic treatment I have tried, even the ones ten times their size and triple their cost."
